Scholarships Committee:


PURPOSE:  To raise funds for scholarships, including the Darlene Toole scholarship, and to distribute scholarships.



  1. Coordinate, manage and execute annual Christmas Bazaar.
  2. Coordinate with Ways and Means for vender support, kitchen detail, table sales, and raffle ticket sales.
  3. Design application and promote/ advertise scholarship availability, possibly using web site.  Timing is cirtical:  Applications to high schools by mid- January so awards can be made prior to graduation in May.
  4. Darlene Toole scholarship may be used in two ways: a) to assist undergraduate and graduate students interested in pursuing a degree or advanced studies or a degree of professional improvements in the field of hearing impaired.  Recipients must be Alaska resident and have a minimum cumulative 3.00 GPA.  The recipient will be obligated to make a significant contribution through lectures, publication, signing or other mean to the Fairbanks community or b) the scholarship can be used to support a specific person, program, conference or workshop that has a significant contribution to the hearing impaired in the Fairbanks community.
  5. General Scholarship- At April General Membership meeting submit request to rollover scholarship amounts and reserve in next year's balance sheet.  Coordinate with Treasurer to ensure that all previous year's scholarships were disbursed.
  6. Applicant must be registered in a degree program at an accredited school or higher education.
  7. Deadline for receiving applications in March 15th (postmark by March 15th).  Applications will be reviewed by at least 51% of the Scholarship committee members.  Scholarships will be awarded on a point process, Points will be awarded to the following areas: Academic performance, Alaska residency, volunteer and community service, and essays submitted with application.  Extra points may be given at the discretion of the committee for those entering the speech and hearing field.
  8. Request checks using the Request for Funding Evaluation and Selection Form and the Request for Payment form from the treasurer.  Checks to be made payable to the student and school.  They should be mailed out no later than August 15th.
  9. Award recipients and High School counselors will be notified by letter as soon as possible after the committee has made their final decision.
  10. Committee will select members to present awards at the appropriate High School awards night.  The member selected will contact the school regarding the presentation.
  11. Provide President annual report by the June meeting.  Include important data, sample forms, accounting, and any recommendations for next year's chair.  A copy will be added to the committee notebook.
